If you like to sing and want to get involved in a fully staged opera then this is your chance. This opportunity is ideal for adults of all ages, experience and voice types.
Basic knowledge such as score reading and following rhythm patterns, although not prerequisites, are valuable abilities and will enhance your progress and enjoyment.
The Chorus consists of about 40 members who meet once a week for three months of practice and rehearsal under the direction of Jennifer Tung, the TCO artistic director/conductor, and Ivan Jovanovic, the music director/pianist (with more letters after their names, and international awards than can be listed here.)
The Toronto City Opera strives for a balance of 25 female voices and 15 male voices.
Your singing will definitely improve, and possibly even your acting skills, if you enjoy expressing emotions. (After all, what is opera if not the musical expression of the deepest human emotions).
The chorus experience may include public concerts, singing with professional soloists, singing at fundraisers, and culminates in your appearance in a fully staged opera in a professional theatre for three days of production (Get ready for standing ovations from an adoring audience).
Rehearsals start Thursday, September 13 and go into the first week of December with the Technical Rehearsals and the Dress Rehearsal with the soloists and finishing with three days of performances at the Al Green Theatre, 750 Spadina Ave.
TCO opera productions are fully staged with professional costumes and with piano musical accompaniment.
Your singing, acting and stage presence will be directed by the TCO artistic team but, as in any endeavor, the more time and practice you put into your experience, the better your expected results.
Rehearsals take place every Thursday from 6:30 – 9:30 pm at St. Matthew’s United Church, 729 St. Clair Ave. West.
The soloists for our productions are auditioned, professional singers chosen for their singing abilities and their suitability for the required roles.
The cost for this opera experience is $275 per each of the fall and the winter sessions. This includes scores, online resources and rental and fitting of professional costumes.
The Toronto City Opera’s 52nd season starts in September 2018 and ends in March 2019.
In the fall session the TCO will be doing Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, or, more correctly, Le Nozze di Figaro, since it will be performed in Italian (better start practicing rolling your “R’s”). Figaro will have three public performances in the beginning of December 2018.
The opera for the winter session will be Verdi’s La Traviata. The winter session rehearsals will start in January 2019 and culminate with three performances at the end of March 2019, which will bring our 52nd season to a close.
Come join us for the adventure – it will be an experience of a lifetime!
TCO chorus registration is on a first come first served basis. When the TCO’s chorus number quota is filled then registration will be closed. Depending on the requirements of the opera, TCO reserves the right to limit the number of choristers within different voice types.
Registration for the winter 2019 session of the Toronto City Opera Chorus is now closed.
Please check our website again when registration for the new season starts around July and August, 2019.
Thank you for your continued interest in the Toronto City Opera.
