Help Ensure Our Future

Our prices are affordable because we want opera to be accessible to everyone! Your donation, however small, will mean that students, seniors and the general public will continue to have access to live opera, and will support a program that has helped young Canadians leap into international singing careers. Plus, since music is a language of form and pattern, increasing music literacy reinforces comprehension and skill-building in a subtle yet fun way. Supporting TCO is good for the sanity of mind and well-being of the community!

Ways to Give

If you are in a position to help the Toronto City Opera, there are different ways you can give. We have five separate funds established through CanadaHelps: a General Fund, a Costume Fund, a Soloist’s Remuneration Fund, a Stage Fund and a Supertitles Fund. A donation through CanadaHelps will generate an instant tax receipt.

The General Fund is used for current year expenses, everything from Salaries, to Music Scores, to Props.

The Costume Fund allows us to rent or create more elaborate and authentic costumes than is otherwise possible.

The Soloist’s Remuneration Fund is a new fund to allow us to remunerate our professional soloists adequately.

The Stage Fund is a new capital fund we are growing to allow us to completely rebuild our set and as well add new lighting and other theatrical effects.

The Supertitles Fund is used to pay for the words on the projected titles, the cost of the projection equipment and as well to fund the wages of an operator.

You can also become a Sustaining Donor through  Canada Helps. A regular monthly donation helps smooth our cashflow and allows us to better plan our expenditures.

You may also remember us in your Will, so that your love of Opera can be sustained long after you shuffle off this mortal coil. Please contact us if you are interested to donate in this format.

How Donations Are Spent

This year Toronto City Opera will need to raise about $80,000 to present our program. Since its modest beginning 67 years ago, our program has helped young singers launch careers and allowed ordinary people who love music to take part in an artistic creation that is highly complex and historical, that can be technically difficult. No other opera company in Toronto is anywhere near as easy to participate in, or as inexpensive to enjoy in performance.

In order to increase accessibility to our audiences, we have introduced projected titles, and given free tickets to classes of high school students. To present a better program for our audiences, and to enrich the learning experience for our own students (some of which have little musical training), we have developed learning aids  (the Toperaid program). Embodying a musical literature, bringing it to life, making it accessible, with great authenticity, is what we do. Please help us if you can.
